WHEREAS, over the past 75 years the Alaska National Guard has defended our nation and state with courage, loyalty, and distinction; and
WHEREAS, the Guard first rendered invaluable service in World War II as the Alaska Territorial Guard, and has since mobilized and deployed troops to the Middle East, Africa, and West Asia in support of the War on Terror; and
WHEREAS, today, the soldiers and airmen of the Alaska National Guard remain poised to assist federal and State missions, protect the lives and property of fellow Alaskans and Americans, preserve public safety, support civil authorities, undertake search and rescue operations, oppose illegal drug trafficking, and more; and
WHEREAS, Guard members also regularly provide relief to Alaskans in times of natural disaster or other emergency including assistance during the recent Funny River Fire on the Kenai Peninsula; and
WHEREAS, with brave soldiers and airmen prepared to mobilize at any given moment to serve and protect our state and country, Alaskans can feel secure and supported in their communities; and
WHEREAS, on this day, and throughout the year, we recognize the incredible efforts of past and present Alaska National Guard members and thank them for the sacrifices they make daily and have made in defending our freedoms and ensuring our security.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Sean Parnell, Governor of the State of Alaska, do hereby proclaim
July 30, 2014 as:
Alaska National Guard Appreciation Day
in Alaska, and encourage Alaskans to support and honor the service of all past and present Alaska National Guard members and their families.
