Disposal of low-level (LLW) and mixed low-level (MLLW) radioactive waste at the Nevada National Security Site (NNSS) has been ongoing since 1961. This LLW/MLLW typically consists of containerized debris, trash, soil, equipment, tools, and discarded personal protective clothing which can generally be handled without any special equipment or clothing, as the level of radioactivity is relatively low and the packaging provides the necessary protection. Permanent disposal of this waste occurs at the NNSS Area 5 Radioactive Waste Management Site in engineered disposal cells excavated to a depth of approximately 25 feet.
