With 9500 + volunteer hours behind every stitch in her beautiful shawls, Suzanne Shuchat is one of the volunteer pillars supporting the patients and families of Mount Sinai hospital. Tending the Welcome Desk once a week with the gracious warmth and kindness of her 87 years, Suzanne knits another of the more than sixty shawls which she makes every year for Geriatrics patients supported through Mount Sinai's MAUVE program (Maximizing Aging Using Volunteer Engagement). She is a trusted voice, directing patients and helping them find where they need to go.
A true craftswoman, whose daughter is also a successful clothing designer, Suzanne has knit close to a thousand shawls and other homespun items of clothing in the seven years since she joined the Knitting Program run by the hospital's Volunteer department.
Every shawl becomes a gift to our patients, there to comfort and warm them through their hospital stay, they are theirs to take home, with the loving human kindness they were first stitched with.
