At age 16, Jack Cadigan appeared to be a healthy, athletic high school student. He played on the high school basketball team and was generally very active. Over the summer, he volunteered at a medical clinic in Haiti with his father, a cardiologist. They discovered an old EKG machine at the clinic, which Dr. Cadigan tested on Jack. His father realized very quickly that there was an issue with Jack’s heart, and brought him to Mass General upon returning home. Dr. Ami Bhatt diagnosed Jack with an atrial septal defect, and Dr. MacGillivray repaired the hole not long after. Jack noticed a big difference in his health right away, not realizing how limited he was before the surgery.
While recovering from his own surgery, Jack learned of a young Haitian girl, Lourdina, with the same heart issue. He asked Dr. MacGillivray if he would be open to performing the surgery, and he said yes. Today, both Jack and Lourdina are healthy and continue to see doctors for follow up check-ins at the Heart Center.
