The important contribution of Len Paul Evans in the Australian wine industry can never be underestimated. Three letters probably sum it up, they are OBE.

Hello, I'm Iain Riggs and I am a Trustee of the Len Evans foundation. My fellow trustees being James Halliday, Sally Evans, Brian Croser and Basil Cellars. We run the foundation, which then runs the Len Evans tutorial and we do rely on industry support to keep this fantastic foundation and wine school operational every year. The aim of the Len Evans tutorial through fund raising of the foundation is to educate Australians up and coming wine industry people, not just wine makers - wine media, retailers, restaurateurs, really anyone who has a passion for the wine industry. The week long tutorial is provided basically in three parts. All of them enjoyable. The first session or the first part we look at is judging wine, so there's the line, 30 wines in it [unintelligible] Chardonnay, Shiraz, Pinot Noir and Cabernet sauvignon. Next we have our three master classes which is an open book wine tasting so the scholars know the wine they're tasting and it's more about learning from James Halliday and Ian McKenzie who does a champagne master class. The dinner sessions are just that - great wines served with food. Wines are masked so if the scholars don't get a night off, the still need to concentrate, but these are wines that even the tutors rarely see. These are the great wines of the world, quite often served in brackets of 2, 3 and 4 wines. So joining aged Bordeaux, aged Burgundy, are features of the aged Australian red bracket. It's might be from the 50’s or 1960’s or an aged Hunter valley red wine bracket Again from the 50’s or 1960’s, The culmination of a week of tasting great wines finishes with the DRC master class on the Friday morning. These are the world's greatest Burgundies and a rare opportunity to see one vintage and all six vineyards lined up side by side, hard work but the scholars do have James Halliday to walk them through the wines. The task of the twelve scholars on the Friday morning is to identify the vintage and the vineyards of the DRC bracket that’s presented to them. If you talk to any of the past scholars and many will say, they will all say that this tutorial week was the greatest week of their lives.

"It was such an amazing week just being able to have a look at all these incredible wines side by side, lots of older vintages of wine that we would never normally be able to taste" by Banjo Harris Plane

"Some of the wines and the access to these wines of these wines will never, ever be found again so it's mind blowing, it's just an epic experience and if you had the opportunity to be sitting on that table of twelve people, it's definitely something to try to get into" by Eddie McDougall

"The story - it's just an amazing week. I didn't expect anything like this. I came to learn and to know & learn more about Australian wine as well but having some bracket of older wine makes you think as well. Sometimes you taste wine and you go through but here there is a lot of thinking and knowledge of one maybe I know or have seen before and some older vintages as well. Just blown away. A great, bunch of people as well at the same time: by Franck Moreau

Having been exposed to some of the great wines of the world. Like have made new friends, they understood wine show judging, they go away with a lasting impression of where Australian wine quality sits in the world. The highlight of the week comes on Friday at lunch time when the Dux of the Len Evans tutorial are announced. Most of the points for the Dux comes from the four judging sessions. The evening sessions & participation in master classes and the final DRC tasting all go towards determining the Dux. So the Qantas Dux of the Len Evans tutorial is a very prestigious award and not only do they get the business return trip to Europe and entry to many of the great chateaux of Europe, but they do get entry into the Australian wine show system.
