The lyrics to my song "Worm's Meat" are posted below, scroll all the way down to see them!

My new song is called "Worm's Meat" ... a title which comes from Romeo & Juliet and was immortalized in Mercutio's famous phrase: "The have made worm's meat of me."
Some background: One day when I was 9 years old, I was in the school library and ventured alone into a back room where the lights were all turned off. I think that because it was the fourth grade library session, the teachers figured no one would go in there... but I was curious and haphazardly wandered in. At that point, I had heard the word "Shakespeare," but didn't know what it was... my eyes adjusted to the darkness and wandered toward a thick grey book with a red stripe on the binding and gold lettering that read: "The Complete Works of William Shakespeare".
I withdrew it from the embrace of the other books around it and proceeded to take it to the librarian so I could check it out. She asked me rather incredulously, "Where did you get this?!" I pointed toward the back-room. She shook her head and told me that I wasn't allowed to read that book, I had to pick another. I was crushed and begged her with my best 9 year old puppy dog eyes to let me take it out anyway. She relented, but on the condition that I take out another book from my reading level. I agreed and chose a book about outer space from the science section that she felt met the requirement.
When I got home, I was beyond excited. This was when I began to fall in love with the scent of old books and the color of aged paper. Of course I didn't understand Shakespeare from the get-go, I had to unravel it like a mystery. But I was bent on learning. By the time the librarian confronted me about it again, I was able to recite the prologue from Romeo and Juliet... after that, she had me recite Shakespeare for the other teachers like some kind of party trick, but really, it was just me falling in love with poetry and the power and romanticism of words. This was a critical part of the foundation that resulted in me becoming a songwriter.
I kept renewing that grey library book over and over during my time at that school. As luck would have it, when the library was having a sale - the librarian let me buy the book for 50 cents. I still have the book in my possession today in the box where I keep my most special treasures.
As a disclaimer: though I took a few college classes on Shakespeare and fell in love with it at an early age, I am hardly an expert. Like everything in life, I believe study is continuous and that there's always more to learn. heart emoticon
So that brings us back to the music: my new song "Worm's Meat" has a few allusions to Romeo and Juliet, but with a modern twist and upbeat melody. I hope you enjoy it! Thank you so much for reading my story and for sharing this journey with me

    "Worm's Meat"
    Music & Lyrics by Katara

    Oh, I am fortune's fool
    No matter what I do
I can't help thinking of you
Lord, what have I gone and done?
    I've made the assumption
    I was the only one

They'll make worm's meat of me
That's why I have to leave
And I'm gonna take you with me
    Baby

Tonight you'll scale all these stones
    Climb up to my window
Show me what it takes to be my Romeo

    oh

    The rabble has arrived
They're right on my front porch
    They're waving their pitchforks
They turn my home to a torch

    The screen door slams
We run as fast as we can
    Hunted by beast and man
    The grass becomes quicksand

They'll make worm's meat of me
That's why I have to leave
And I'm gonna take you with me
    Baby

Tonight you'll scale all these stones
    Climb up to my window
Show me what it takes to be my Romeo

    oh

    Sticks and stones
    May break my bones
    But by any other name
    It's still a rose
    Though with a kiss
    Seal this promise
Mine's the one and only name
    On your lips

They'll make worm's meat of me
That's why I have to leave
And I'm gonna take you with me
    Baby

    Tonight they're throwing their stones
    Escape through my window
You've got what it takes to be my hero

    oh

They'll make worm's meat of us
Now they've got us on the run
Set sail straight for that setting sun
    My love

    Tonight we're two skipping stones
We've got them on their toes
Where we stop they'll never know

    oh

    It's just you and me
    On our own
In your arms I'm always home

    Oh, I am fortune's fool
    No matter what I do
I can't help thinking of you
