In July 2013, my sister and I headed out for an amazing road trip along the wild West Coast. We shot over 15 000 pictures (ok, there might be some time-lapse material, but still, it's a lot); taped over 1 000 clips (so this is the very, very, very best of; yet still missing some amazing moments). The trip took us 26 days and we've covered over 6600 miles, went through eight states and used two different rental cars (Toyota Yaris and later on Chevy Cruze, which we found to be much better).
Our starting point was a vista point at the Golden Gate Bridge and the ending point in Sacramento, CA (well, actually, it was at the Rental Car Return Center at SFO airport, but whatever).
We have seen California, Nevada, Arizona, Utah, Idaho, Wyoming, Montana and Oregon, some amazing cities, some of the national parks, hiking trails and one aquarium, and overall, it was awesome. We slept in the car most nights, which made us struggle really bad towards the end of the road trip (not really comfy after the first week of excitement, usually it was too hot or too cold during the night). But it also allowed us to save a shitload of money we could and did use for other things (Las Vegas Premium Outlets, here we come! :D).
We have seen a little bit of the dark side too, even when we tried to avoid it at all costs. E.g. we considered Los Angeles and surrounding cities too dangerous to sleep over in a car, so we drove two hours out of that shithole (seriously). Or once, we didn't find a rest stop to sleep at, so we decided to settle down at a parking lot near Subway at a truck stop. But we drove off quickly after I saw a pothead doing meth right in a van we parked next to. Bad stuff. Also, we've seen tens of car accidents, three of those happened right in front of our eyes. Not pretty either.
But most of it was as beautiful as we imagined. San Francisco, highway #1, Huntington Beach, Big Bear Lake, desert, Strip of the Las Vegas, Grand Canyon, mtb riding in Moab, Salt Lake City, Yellowstone, Portland. Only a few out of all the places we've seen and things we did, that were just amazing.
I highly recommend going on a road trip to anyone. It can be done pretty low cost with two people sleeping in a car, but next time, we are renting a minivan. Personally, I suggest going with a Volkswagen EuroVan, but I doubt that one will be somewhere to rent... :D :(
As for the technical side of this edit, we used Canon EOS 650D with Sigma 17-70/f2.8-4.5 and Canon 70-200/f4 (+EF 50/f1.8, but he died at the trail to the Hollywood sign after he fell off my camera bag), GoPro HD Hero 3 Black Edition with GoPole and two iPhones 4S.
