Senator Jesse Helms was an American politician that served five times as a United States Senator from North Carolina. Jesse Helms was the longest-serving popularly elected Senator in North Carolina's history. Jesse Alexander Helms, Jr., born on October 18, 1921 in Monroe, NC, attended Wingate University and Wake Forest University and then began working as a newspaper journalist and in radio broadcasting. By the early 1970s, Helms was decided to pursue politics after being encouraged by many supporters to run for the United States Senate. He won 4 more elections and was a Senator for thirty years. Senator Jesse Helms retired to Raleigh in 2003 with his wife, three children and seven grandchildren. Helms lived happily in retirement with his family until his death on July 4, 2008.
