As Standard Motor Products nears its 100th year in business, the company is proud to design and manufacture a majority of its parts in its own facilities around the world. One facility is the company’s engineering lab in Long Island City, NY, where a team of engineers designs, develops, and tests SMP products to ensure performance and longevity.
The team conducts end-of-line testing such as Vibration Tests, Salt-Fogging Tests, and Visual Inspections, as well as specialized tests for key parts such as switches, fuel injectors, ignition coils, and tire pressure monitoring sensors.
Before any test can take place, SMP designs and develops the testing equipment and tooling. Here, a designer simulates how plastic material will flow into an injection-molded part to identify thin walls that could lead to problems.
SMP even develops customized tooling to meet its design, engineering, and manufacturing standards. In the machine shop, SMP manufactures testers and production equipment, and even builds machines for the production floor.
The end product for the technician is a replacement part that has been designed, developed, tooled, manufactured and tested to perform properly and withstand real-world conditions, every time.
When you multiply the design and testing capabilities found at every SMP facility around the world, it’s no wonder why Standard Motor Products has been the aftermarket leader since 1919.
