For IFR students practicing Exercise 2: Melody, this is a demonstration of a modal improvisation in the 2nd harmonic environment.
Both musicians are using just the seven notes of the major scale throughout the entire improvisation. They are using note 2 as the tonal center, which causes your ear to feel what we call the 2nd harmonic environment of the major scale.
This harmonic environment is also called the "dorian mode" of the major scale, and this is the harmonic material that Miles Davis used for his classic recording "So What".
In the Improvise for Real method, this modal style of improvising is one of the first things you will learn.
