Tri-Cub3r is designed to solve 3x3x3 Rubik's Cube® style puzzles. It is built from LEGO® elements including three MINDSTORMS® EV3 sets, with the addition of a Samsung Galaxy S5 smartphone.
The image recognition and solving algorithm allows regular, colored cubes and also cubes with graphical images or logos to be solved. The graphical cubes require the orientation of the center pieces on each face to be determined and solved during the process. This makes the solution slightly more complex and a few moves longer than for a standard Rubik's Cube.
The algorithm has been adapted from that used in the SudoCuber design so that it can recognize and adjust automatically and efficiently between colored and graphical cubes.
The new mechanical design allows cubes to be manipulated reliably at speeds comparable to Yellow Cube Machine.
In addition, the mechanism can manipulate cubes that are harder to turn than typical "speedcubes" and so is suitable for solving promotional cubes such as the one shown in this video. These cubes are typically designed to be produced at low cost and often somewhat stiffer to turn than more expensive cubes.
My thanks go to Marijn Willemse, Trimergo who challenged and inspired me to create this new design.
As always, many thanks to my very good friend Mike Dobson (co-designer of CubeStormer II and CUBESTORMER 3) for allowing me to use one of his great tracks for this video, "RKM-1". Thanks Mike :)
