Carolina Gonzalez was diagnosed with diabetes right before she left her job and lost her health insurance. As a freelance reporter and editor, Carolina didn’t know what she was going to do without insurance and the necessary medical expertise to manage her chronic disease.
Then, a friend suggested she sign up for an affordable MetroPlus Health Plan and go to HHC Gouverneur Health for all her health care needs. “The thing that grabbed me was that all the services I need would be supplied in one place and that dental and vision were also covered,” said Carolina. At Gouverneur she met Dr. Vincent Santillo and with his help started to take care of herself. In addition to managing her diabetes, she has seen a gynecologist and had her vision tested.
Since meeting Dr. Santillo, Carolina has worried less about managing her chronic disease. “I was stressed out because I have a lot of relatives with diabetes and so I know how important it is to monitor the disease. Not only is there the physical condition to worry about when you have to deal with a chronic disease, but it is important to be able to feel vulnerable with the person treating you. Once you have a primary care doctor you trust then other things fall into place,” said Carolina.
Carolina also feels that her time was considered important by the staff at Gouverneur. For example, at the end of her appointment with the gynecologist he asked when her last mammogram was and when she said she was overdue he suggested she stop by the lab on her way out. “It was the end of the day and I knew I was making the tech late to go home but she was awesome! She said ‘let’s do it’ and we got it done right then. She had a great attitude,” said Carolina.
