We've been making interactive or clickable timelines for years, but there's a new feature in PowerPoint that makes it a lot simpler to make and operate - Zoom To.
You can find it on the Insert ribbon, and instead of creating a hyperlinked button or image, you insert a Zoom To object. It's basically inserting an image, applying a hyperlink to it, applying a zoom transition to it, and then giving you the option to return to a designated portal slide.
It might sound complicated, now that I've written it out, but follow along on the video and it should all make a lot more sense.
