Assita Kanko is a Belgian politician. As a young woman born and raised in Burkina Faso, she has made gender equality issues a top priority on her agenda.
When asked to address women's underrepresentation in decision-making, she does not mince her words. The situation must change. 27% of women sit as MPs in European national parliaments. Worse still, 18% only sit on boards of large companies. Women should not sit on their hands. On the contrary, they must take their future into their hands!
True to herself, Assita suggests "Why not systematically vote for a woman when she runs for election? I always hear people complain about election results, when they are out. But the results of the elections reflect the voters' choice. Don’t complain afterwards that there are not enough women in government. Act before it is too late."
