  • THE DOUG DUFFEY INTERNATIONAL SOUL BAND Play all

These are videos of the Doug Duffey International Soul Band shot in Europe, mostly at the Blue Note in Biel, Switzerland. This is the band I mostly work with. We have a great feel and are a big family. We'll be doing a lot of recording and video-ing on the winter tour [December 07- February 08] We're planning to record the live shows as well as do some 'rehearsal room' recordings for release. I want to do some 'old school' [Chess records] type recording: playing live with room mics- as well as doing some 8-track recordings. We plan to video everything! This should be fun!

  • DOUG DUFFEY [SOLO] VARIOUS Play all

Videos from various live solo performances from various decades. Although I perform more with the band than solo these days, I still do a few solo shows.

I recorded 3 different solo sessions in studios [Monroe & New Orleans, Louisiana- circa 1988-1992] with intentions of releasing solo cds from them... but didn't. I did release cassettes and sold them at my Bourbon Street shows; and did release one solo cd in Europe "Living the Blues" DTM/EMI [out of print] from those 3 sessions. I am in the process of editing 2 cds from them NOW to release on cd.baby.com VERY soon [one cd of bluesy Louisiana stuff- the other the more cabaret/jazz/ballad stuff] This is mainly due to the reaction to the solo videos here on youtube. Thanks!

  • DOUG DUFFEY [SOLO] BOURBON STREET, NEW ORLEANS 1990s Play all

Clips from my solo sets at the Tricou House, Bourbon Street, New Orleans- shot in 1991 and 1992- where i worked 6 days a week- 4 hours a day- for years! it was probably the greatest learning experience of my life. i learned a lot about performing: dealing with audiences, crazy people...you name it! the piano was right in the front door- right ON bourbon street, so you not only had the people in the bar, but "whoever" to deal with. it was always a circus! the piano was almost always out of tune, or had a broken string; which you just had to accept and "keep on gwine"... the show went on!
there were 4 different pianists a day- this was a blues bar- and they all banged the hell out of the piano... starting at 1.30 PM till 4 AM in the morning... and even later if there were people still there. during Mardi Gras it was non-stop! i was probably the hardest on the piano. i actually broke bass strings with my left hand! i was also the loudest! but it was great fun, MOST of the time, and in retrospect a great 'life' experience.

  • DOUG DUFFEY- TECHNO DISCO CABARET- 1980s Play all

"TECHNO DISCO CABARET" - done around 1985 in Little Rock. I wrote all the songs/music [4 completely different 45 minute sets!]- and played every instrument [no midi or samples] on the tracks- except for some guitar/bass parts- by Tim Blunk- or basic tracks I'd written/recorded w/ some friends & added to. I recorded it all on my old 4 track cassette- bounced tracks, added more stuff-then mixed it down to 2 track cassette as backing tracks for the live show; we sang all vocals live. I did almost all the lead vocals- Linda Bailey, Bill Dunn, and Tim Blunk added backing/ and extra vocals- and Tim played 'live' guitar to the tracks. It was an experiment... but too ahead of it's time.
I think the show freaked people out; they didn't know what to make of it... it was rather dark [well, it was the 80s!]- They went to the club expecting a dance band, and they got ART!... the journalists loved it; it got some great reviews. Point made!
It was the catalyst for the next 'all original' band I did called "Doug Duffey/Street Level/New Orleans" [Tim, Bill & I - with Carl Whitehead on drums/keys] in about 1988. We were a techno funk rock art "all originals" band; we did some openings in NO- for Divine [yep... Divine!], the Weather Girls, and a great live WTUL radio show live at Tipitina's; we played several other cities in Louisiana. But, as with the cabaret show, we were way too 'different' for 1988 Nawlins, dawlin... Several songs that I put in this "show" ["dangerous love" and "disarmed"] and in DDSLNO were later revisited for my 1st cd 'Danger, Sex & Sound FX' [Rabadash Records- New Orleans]- which is available online from Rabadash or cdbaby etc.
"Lead Me Back" was later recorded in a solo version, which I plan to release on a solo cd, soon. For those reasons these 'pre-cd' vids of those songs are on here. All words and music/production/by Doug Duffey [c] 2007---[update]

I've been transferring the old [1985 onward] 4-track cassette "writers tapes" to digital, remixing them and cleaning them up. They sound fantastic [to me] and I have found so many good songs on them, that I am considering releasing them all via cdbaby SOON. Although several songs from them, have been re-cut and ended up on my various cds, there are a LOT more songs from them [ in various genres] that should be heard. The original 'writers' tapes have a certain sound and feel that I actually prefer to later studio versions; they're very minimal and intimate, and have a certain presence lacking in the sudio versions, albeit lacking the better sound quality...or maybe not!
