Three years ago I took the plunge into youtube not knowing what the heck I was doing, but wanted to share our lives with our family who lived very far away from us. We were only a month away from the birth of our first child, Olivia when we posted our first vlog. Soon after her birth our channel gained more and more attention when viewers heard how Olivia came to be.
You see, Erica and I could not get pregnant naturally so we had to go through a procedure called IVF (in-vitro fertilization) in order to conceive a child. (IVF is a very expensive procedure costing around $15,000 and there was no way we could afford that.) So, a year before Olivia was born we went to a seminar ran by an IVF clinic near us to learn more about it and find out what our financial options were. Miraculously we were extremely lucky that day because at the end of the seminar they gave away a free IVF cycle and WE WON IT! And exactly a year after that, to the day, Olivia was born.
As time went by with our channel our popularity began to grow and so did my editing skills. I was self taught, so each video I would try something new and do a skit, song, or even a stop motion music video in between the vlogs. But they would always incorporate my family in them. This was a journey that I wanted all of us to be a part of.
Eventually we started looking at our options for having a second child. This time around it would not be free but I did have better insurance that would cover most of the procedure. We couldn't do it alone, though and we needed help raising the money. I would never ask my viewers for money but I did ask for there support. Within the following months after we started saving for IVF our viewers helped us win $1,500 in social media contests and we raised about the same because of them just watching our videos thanks to our YouTube partnership.
All in all we only had to personally come up with around $2,000 on our own which was tough to scrape together, but we wanted this child so bad that we made sacrifices in our lives to make it happen. If it wasn't for the support of our viewers, we may have never found the money.
On August 28th, 2012 Lucas...... our son....... was born.
I am forever grateful to the viewers that made his life possible. With him we are now complete as a family.
I'm not giving up vlogging, though! Sharing our lives has become a part of our lives. Olivia and Lucas do some of the craziest things, I'd be insane NOT to share them! I love my family with all my heart, and I love my YouTube family for making it possible.
