As part of its award winning Habitat Management Plan, the City of Carlsbad has created natural open space preserves like the Carlsbad Oaks North Habitat Conservation Area to protect the local environment and land conservation.

The Carlsbad Oaks Preserve, set up about seven years ago in response to the development of the Carlsbad Oaks North Business Park, covers a little over 200 acres. Located in the eastern part of Carlsbad, the preserve is about one and one half times the size of Legoland. Public access to the preserve land is limited to a 1.3 mile trail located at the corner of Faraday Avenue and El Fuerte Street. For more information visit http://www.carlsbadca.gov/s....

A variety of birds, rodents, and other wildlife use the pond located near the center of the open space preserve for drinking water.

This preserve land remains very important to Carlsbad. It is one of the larger, intact areas of natural habitat still available in the area.

The City of Carlsbad maintains the 1.3 miles of trails while the Center for Natural Lands Management manages and maintains the adjacent large conservation area that supports a number of habitat types. These include coastal live oak woodland, coastal sage scrub, chaparral and native grassland. There are many rare and sensitive plant and animal species in the preserve, such as the Coastal California gnatcatcher, San Diego thorn-mint, and thread-leaved brodiaea.

Staff monitors the plants and wildlife in the habitat to insure that they are in good health and status. They do invasive plant and animal removal as well as conduct a variety of scientific studies to help determine whether the plants and wildlife are thriving or dying in the preserve.

Rolling hills, miles of walking trails, shimmering lagoons -- these beautiful open spaces give residents a break from their daily routines and attract visitors year round. The City of Carlsbad has made a strong commitment to preserving open space to ensure an excellent quality of life for our residents. In 1986, residents voted to ensure abundant land is set aside as permanent open space, and the city is on track to meet this goal.
