Lawrence Ferlinghetti reads A Portrait of the Young Artist at City LightsLawrence Ferlinghetti, poet and founder of City Lights Books, author of A Coney Island of the Mind and Pictures of the Gone World, among numerous other books, has been drawing from life since his student days in Paris where he frequented the Academie Julien and where he did his first oil painting.
Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man is a novel, said to be somewhat autobiographical, by James Joyce. Joyce's novel delves into the inner workings of the mind of a young Stephen Dedalus, as he thinks twice about the way he was raised: Catholic and Irish. It was difficult to publish this book because of Joyce's questioning of the Catholic faith.
