WASHINGTON D.C. — At the 2019 March for Life, a group of high school kids from Covington Catholic High School in Park Hills, KY, were waiting to board a charter bus at the Lincoln Memorial. Many of the kids were wearing "Make America Great Again" hats and pro-life attire.
Before the incident, the group of students were already in engaging in conservative-themed chants to pass the time and have fun.
Coincidentally, the Indigenous Peoples March was also taking place at the Capitol.
While they were waiting, Nathan Phillips, a Native American man beating a drum approached the group from Covington Catholic High School. The man was followed by at least two other identifiable people in Indigenous style attire. Also around the man, were multiple people with cameras.
As Phillips continued beating the drum, the high school students thought that he walked over so they would cheer with them.
"He came into the group and we thought he wanted us to cheer with him," one student told Cowger Nation. "We were all at the Lincoln memorial steps, because we that is where we had to meet up before leaving. Our group was gathered on the steps doing cheers (like we do every year, because the people there [at the March for Life] enjoy the cheers). So, we were cheering and the man started to walk over into our group. As I’m sure you saw in the one video, he was going from kid to kid banging a drum with people behind him, who were following him with a camera. We were all already rowdy from the cheers, and since he came into the group, we thought he wanted us to cheer with him."
Following the incident, some of the kids from Covington Catholic High School were watching NBC and saw their faces on television, being accused of harassing an elderly Native American man, who also happens to be a veteran. The story was picked up by TMZ, USA Today, BuzzFeed, The New York Times, CBS News, Vox, The Huffington Post, Variety, and Slate.
To make matters worse, Phillips performed the same stunt in 2015, telling a local FOX 2-Detroit channel that he was racially harassed by a group of students from Eastern Michigan University. This establishes that Phillips has a history of targeting, approaching, and harassing students to then accuse them of racial harassment. This is character assignation. In addition to video evidence, this account has been verified by multiple eyewitness accounts from students at the event, all expressing the same occurrence.
Therefore, this means that the media also engaged in the character assassination of every innocent student from Covington Catholic High School, who attended the March for Life. They based this entire story upon a man who has a history of harassing innocent high school and college students, solely to get his name in the news. This is horrific, and the Fake News media should be ashamed of themselves. They slandered and libeled innocent teenagers, because of their animosity for conservatives and Trump supporters.
