Travel in style on our 1 mile country branch line aboard our authentic luxury pullman train whilst being hauled by both a live steam and heritage diesel locomotive.
Whilst at your comfortable seat surrounded in a cozy and relaxing atmosphere, Father Christmas himself will greet you and talk to you all at your seat before giving your little ones a fantastic present!
Passengers can choose from 3 seating options whilst booking (a pay at the gate option may be available please call the railway before hand)
All carriages are heated and decorated, a free present is given to every child on board suited to age. Father Christmas will try to spend an decent and equal amount of time with each group and child/children.
Premier Standard class - Seated in comfortable arm chairs in an authentic victorian-age passenger carriage called 'Gresley' named after the engineer who designed it, he also designed the world's fastest steam locomotive 'Mallard' and the world famous 'Flying Scotsman'. Real original vintage wood tables are also provided in this carriage as standard. Passengers will also be able to see the visiting steam locomotive 'Wissington' (which originally worked in the local area) hard at work pulling your train, whilst you can also see the train's friendly guard help keep the train safe, watch them wave the flag and tell the driver when it's alright to start moving - A little 'behind the scenes' bonus that you don't see on many railways.
Pullman class - You will be seated in a real vintage pullman carriage called 'Herminone' this carriage was at once part of the luxruous 'Brighton Belle' train, and more recently was used for the filming of 'The woman in black, with Daniel Radcliff actually sitting in the carriage for filming. Afterwards the filming studio kindly donated the seat covers to the railway, so we now have a real life, moving film set.
Royal Class - Recently refurbished by skilled volunteers, who are experts in carpentry and railway carriages, this Pullman carriage's claim to fame is very regal in that Queen Elizabeth the Second actually sat in this very carriage along with other members of the royal entourage. This carriage, named 'Aquila' is finished in a deep confy royal blue carpet with aged wood panelling and luxury royal red and gold stitched arm chairs, vintage tables with working signature pullman lamps for that authentic touch, making this carriage unique in the preserved railway world and creates a private, cozy atmosphere for you and your group - perfect for seeing Father Christmas himself!
Meanwhile, off the train the adults can also have a little (non-alcoholic, sorry!) treat with a free bean-to-cup coffee or a fresh cup of tea in our 1950's 'sidings' buffet carriage (under new and improved management!)
Passengers can also have unlimited rides in our heated and decorated 1950's vintage railcar which offers a driver's eye view of the line, it's like being in the cab yourself, fascinating young and old - going back to a time - not that long ago, when the daily commute wasn't something totally dreaded by everyone.
Some parts of the site (like the miniature railway) are currently closed and are being re developed with support from the Heritage Lottery fund to bring you some brand new and exciting developments for the 2018 and 2019 seasons! Keep checking the website and CVR facebook page for updates, and we thank for your patience whilst these new facilites are being constructed.
Passengers can also enter a free competition to win a luxury christmas hamper (which contains honey made around the local area and even from the CVR's own bee hives!)
Children can also take part in a railway treasure hunt, see if you can spot where the christmas friends are hiding - some are quite tricky!
We also have our fully working signal box (which originates from the local Cressing station on the Braintree line) open for public visits and the Tierney model railway, which is interactive and has at least 4 or 5 trains running at any given time, plus other shunting movements as well (staff permitting)
Despite the on-going construction, which any member of staff not undertaking safety critical duties (like driving, walking the track etc..) would be happy to talk to you about, amongst other general enquires of course we hope all of our past and future passengers and visitors have a great time.
The railway site and our carriages also are also available for private hire including (but not limited to) Filming work and parties.
We also host a Pullman dining train service with a licensed bar on board. For more information please visit the website and then contact us for bookings or enquires.
We thank you for your custom and look forward to welcoming you back next year from our brand new entrance and car park!
