More than 11,000 Ekklesiyar Yan'uwa a Nigeria members (EYN, the Church of the Brethren in Nigeria) have been killed and over 1,400 church buildings have been destroyed during the past several years of hostility. -- The terrorist group Boko Haram has devastated much of Northeastern parts of Nigerian, killing thousands of Christians and Muslims necessitating the displacement of thousands into refugee camps.
The kidnapping 400 Chibok girls by the Boko Haram was from a school established by the Church of the Brethren. Having partnered for over 100 years with the Nigerian EYN Church, the Brethren have established schools and hospitals in Nigeria to support its people.
Recently, the group from Elizabethtown, PA, "Take 10, Tell 10," took a two-week learning tour to Nigeria with the goal of experiencing the African country, "like it really is." The group of 10, consisting of college students and older adults were invited to make the trip, in support of the Nigerian EYN Church, which has partnered with the Church of the Brethren.
Members of "Take 10, Tell 10,"were treated to numerous opportunities, beyond their wildest imaginations. They came back to share their stories and experiences.
"Brethren Voices" host, Brent Carlson sat down with some of the members of the journey. Often heard were expressions of gratitude and appreciation for the Church of the Brethren in America, who have provided much support and encouragement to their Nigerian Brothers and Sisters.
Despite Nigeria's horrific devastation, the Elizabethtown group experienced wonderful Nigerian EYN hospitality, by people who continue to have faith, hope and joy during very turbulent times.
Many EYN Brethren are attempting to return home, however this is very difficult as the displacement has left them without homes and a livelihood of planting and harvesting food. Recent attacks at Kauthama, a village near the EYN headquarters, left 80 percent of the homes destroyed as well as the crops which were taken.
