Like most of our institutions, the Church of the Brethren has attempted to become a Multi-Ethnic Church. Over the years, numerous queries brought to the Annual Conference asked for direction and requested actions to be taken, to become more diverse.
SEPARATE NO MORE, a study paper submitted by the Intercultural Committee of the Church of the Brethren Annual Conference of 2007, was approved for implementation. For 3 years, the committee had studied and researched, concluding that it was a plea for transformation, calling each person to more fully and completely follow Christ's example of loving all people in loving our neighbors. "Through Christ's love, we become the inclusive family of God."
The committee recommended that a full-time, funded specialist position be established within Congregational Life Teams that would assist in facilitating intercultural activity within the denomination and serve as a denominational clearing house for intercultural resources.
Brent Carlson meets with Gimbiya Kettering who began serving as coordinator of Intercultural Ministries in January 2013. The focus of her position is to facilitate planning for the Intercultural Consultation and Celebration, to develop networks of support for ethnic minority congregations and their leaders. She also assists the denominational staff in becoming more effective in living out their intercultural visions.
