Society for the Advancement of Blood Management

SABM is a nonprofit, multidisciplinary and professional society comprised of a network of medical practitioners from a wide variety of medical and scientific disciplines whose collective mission is to improve health outcomes, increase safety, and reduce healthcare costs through the advancement of scientific knowledge and clinical practice in Patient Blood Management (PBM).

PBM has been described as a concept pre-empting and significantly reducing the resort to transfusion by addressing anemia, blood loss, and hypoxia as modifiable risk factors that may result in transfusion long before transfusion may even be considered. PBM can be applied to every stage of care as represented by the four tenets/guiding principles established by SABM: Optimizing Coagulation, Interdisciplinary Blood Conservation Modalities, Patient-Centered Decision Making, and Managing Anemia.
