Rayman 2 takes place in a world called the Glade of Dreams, and revolves around its invasion and occupation by an armada of interstellar Robo-Pirates, led by Admiral Razorbeard. Prior to the invasion, the Robo-Pirates destroyed over one hundred planets in the galaxy, with the intention of enslaving their inhabitants. Upon the invasion of the Glade of Dreams, the Robo-Pirates were battled against by Rayman, Globox, and other allies. After some battles, Rayman's capture occurs after the explosion of the Primordial Core. Ly the Fairy telepathically communicates with Rayman explaining the consequences of the damage, with the core's shattering into 1000 Yellow Lums, and the capture of many fighters. Rayman's powers are also lost due to this, and he finds himself captured by the Robo-Pirates at the beginning of the game.

Mario's hectic lifestyle has him embark on a vacation to Isle Delfino along with Princess Peach, Toadsworth and a slew of Toads for a well earned break. Upon arrival their plane is greeted to a screeching halt by a vandal's toxic graffiti painting. Mario searches for a way to clear it up and discovers F.L.U.D.D. the computerised Water Pump designed to handle any mess.
After he uses the device to rid the airstrip of a nefarious plant and recovering a Shine Sprite, he is arrested by the island's police and convicted of being the vandal who has polluted the entire island with these toxic drawings and creatures - the reason for the Shine Sprites' disappearance. Mario is thereby sentenced to rid the island of it's plight, whilst being falsely accused as the perpetrator who bears a striking resemblance to himself.
Mario plans to use his talents and brand new tool F.L.U.D.D. to recover the Shine Sprites and clear the island as well as his name.
The plot, which immediately follows that of the first game, consists of Mario returning to his castle after rescuing Princess Daisy, only to find that it has been taken over by an old enemy, Wario, while Mario was in Sarasaland. The 6 Golden Coins (Mario's keys to the castle) were spread throughout Mario Land, and Mario must retrieve these coins in order to defeat Wario, reclaim his castle, and restore order to Mario Land.
