Welcome to BirdLife Malta’s YouTube channel. What started as a small ornithological society for the study of birds in 1962 has today grown to be the largest eNGO in Malta. Today we manage 4 nature reserves, have succeeded in limiting illegal hunting in Malta, run a nationwide school education programme, and manage several EU-funded scientific studies about Malta’s seabirds. This production illustrates our history, who we are, and what we do.
Over the span of five years the EU Life+ Malta Seabird Project has carried out seabird research in order to find the most important sites out at the sea for Maltese seabirds. As a result, eight new marine Important Bird Areas (IBAs) have now been recognised by BirdLife International and included in the Natura 2000 network of protected nature sites by the European Commission. These were designated as marine Special Protection Areas (SPAs) by the Maltese Government in April 2016.
