I was invited to Bishkek by two of my Northwestern friends: Andrew, President of www.auca.kg, whom I knew from the NU faculty because I am an NU trustee, and Laura, who works in the US Embassy in Bishkek and was one of my dorm mates during our freshman year at NU many years ago.
I arrived in Bishkek on Tuesday, May 28, and spent time meeting with AUCA students, faculty, and staff. Laura also arranged for me to meet with the Young Entrepreneurs Association of Kyrgyzstan and speak to young Kyrgyz students at an "American Corner" event at a local public library.
Prior to my visit, the closest I had been to Bishkek was New Delhi, India, over 1,000 miles to the south. So I created a short web survey and emailed it out to the seniors. 44 of the 232 graduating seniors replied, and you'll read below that it really helped me focus my remarks.
