The Alaska SeaLife Center has opened its newest animal care area, the I.Sea.U critical care unit. The unit's first patient is an orphaned male walrus calf from Barrow who arrived at the Center on July 22. The 275-pound calf is stable, suckling readily from a bottle and interacting well with his caregivers.
Visitors to the Center can overlook the activities in the I.Sea.U through one-way windows. The facility was made possible through the generous donations from Barbara Weinig, the MK LeLash Foundation, ConocoPhillips, the Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium, and the Minnesota Zoo.
