On May 1st, from 6:30 am to 10:30 am, Shanmugham Road was closed to motor vehicles and opened for the public to make the most of a traffic-free street. It was a joyous daybreak at Menaka when Cochinites shook off the Sunday morning slumber of the streets and took to walking, running, dancing, skating, cycling and playing.
For pedestrians and bicyclists, Theruvulsavam was a rare opportunity to enjoy the streets without the usual clutter. Kids conquered the car-free roads with their tricycles and roller skates. With art, music and lots of fun activities, Theruvulsavam was truly a people’s celebration in one of the major city centres of Kochi.
