Rice's Evangeline, or The Belle of Acadia (1874 – Revival, April 2 & 3, 2016)

On April 2 & 3, 2016, The Longfellow Chorus presented a revival of the Victorian musical comedy, "Evangeline, or The Belle of Acadia," in John Ford Theatre, Portland , Maine. Written and first performed in 1874, the libretto used in this performance was based on 1896 prompt books archived at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, as well as resources from the Harvard Theatre Collection, Houghton Library, Harvard University. Because the third act has been lost, a new abbreviated third act was reconstructed for this performance based on synopses found in programs from the 1870s. This allowed presentation of songs originally presented in the third act and served as an encore act for our show. The Evangeline piano vocal score, published in 1877, was orchestrated for this performance by artistic director Charles Kaufmann, as well as period piano music and songs associated with Evangeline. Just several original orchestrations survive in manuscript form, those by George Wiegand, which were used in an instrumental medley for a concert given in September 1877 in Saratoga Springs, New York. These few Wiegand instrumental orchestrations were adapted for our performance.
