Global Summit on Intellectual Property & Access to Medicines: Pathways to Access
Marrakech, Morocco
15 - 17 January 2018

It has been 23 years since the Agreement Establishing the World Trade Organisation (WTO) was signed in Marrakesh, Morocco in 1994 and along with it the adoption of the Agreement on Trade Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS) by all WTO members. The TRIPS Agreement required WTO members to amend their national/regional IP laws and grant 20 year product patents on pharmaceuticals. For many developing and least developed countries these were drastic changes to their national IP regimes. Since 2005, as the TRIPS requirements have become entrenched in the patent laws of developing countries the true scope and impact of this Agreement have become evident.

The Global Summit is planned as a return to Marrakesh to reflect, discuss and strategise on over two decades of the implementation of the TRIPS Agreement, its impact on health and access to medicines and to both imagine and re- imagine what the next two decades of TRIPS implementation will (or could) bring. The recognition, preservation and sustainability of the work of civil society in this regard is central to the theme and sessions at the Global Summit.
