When We Were Sisters by Emilie Richards

How could I write a novel about a megastar singer-songwriter without music to accompany it?

I had to incorporate songs about growing up without a mother and father, and Kellie Pickler's "Mother's Day" and "Tough" set exactly the right mood.

Songs about strong women making it on their own only made sense since that's what Cecilia, the superstar and one of two major characters, is famous for. Thanks to the Pistol Annies, Katie Perry and Christina Aguilera for a few of the many fabulous songs I considered.

Gloria Gaynor's "I Will Survive" is mentioned in the novel, as is Whitney Houston's "I Will Always Love You." But I needed the right song about sisters and Celine Dion's Because You Loved Me, was the perfect thank you from Robin to Cecilia for all she did for her.. When she says "You were my voice when I couldn't speak," I get goosebumps. Because that's what Cecilia was for the child Robin.

Of course the story has a romantic side, a husband and wife separated by miles and opinions. "Missing You" and "Talking to the Moon" brought that part of the novel to life.

I was delighted to include "All of Me" by John Legend and Adele's "One and Only" two of my all time favorites, which are linked to another relationship, but I'll let you read the book to see whose and how.

Finally Annie Lennox's "Universal Child" about protecting children everywhere so thoroughly encapsulates the theme of the book it was the perfect ending. What a joy to find all these songs and share them now.
