Tatiana Shubin, "Grid Power"

In this series of videos, Tatiana Shubin (San Jose State University) leads a Math Teachers' Circle session titled "Grid Power." A sheet of grid paper and a simple counting question reveal some deep mathematical surprises. Along the way, teachers learn helpful problem solving strategies.

Math Teachers' Circles (http://www.mathteacherscircle.org) are professional communities of middle school math teachers and mathematicians who meet regularly to work on rich math problems. Our goal is to help middle school math teachers confidently incorporate open-ended, authentic mathematical problem solving in their teaching.

This video was filmed in summer 2014, when 30 mathematicians and math teachers from across the country came to a "How to Run a Math Teachers' Circle" workshop at the American Institute of Mathematics in Palo Alto, CA.
