Currently playing for the Washington Mystics of the WNBA, Elena Delle Donne is recognized as one of the best basketball players and athletes in the world. Her successful career began in high school where she was a star at Ursuline Academy, leading her team to three straight Delaware State Championship titles. She was ranked as the number one overall high school recruit, and named a McDonald’s All-American. Delle Donne chose to play collegiately at the University of Delaware in order to remain close to her family, specifically her sister Lizzie, who has Cerebral Palsy and is blind and deaf.
At Delaware, Elena became one of the most decorated collegiate athletes of all time. She began her time at UD as a middle hitter on the volleyball team and led them to a conference tournament title, before returning to the basketball court in 2009. As a freshman, Delle Donne averaged 27 points a game, and was named CAA player and rookie of the year. She went on to win the CAA player of the year award three times, while scoring the fifth most points in women’s NCAA history. In 2013, she was selected to the WBCA, Associated Press, USBWA, and John Wooden All American first-teams, as well as named the female scholar-athlete of the year.
Selected second overall in the 2013 WNBA Draft, Delle Donne quickly became one of the league’s brightest stars. She won rookie of the year, and was voted to the All-Star game after leading the league in votes received. Delle Donne broke the rookie record for blocks in a season and holds the record for career free throw percentage. She has returned to the All-Star game in each of her seasons in the league, and won the WNBA MVP award in 2015.
Elena Delle Donne thrives on and off the basketball court, and she receives much of her inspiration from her sister Lizzie. The two are extremely close, and Delle Donne has done a tremendous amount for disability awareness around the world. The MVP is a Special Olympics Global Ambassador, joining others to elevate the Special Olympics movement and advance opportunities for people with disabilities. During All-Star weekend, Delle Donne participated in the Special Olympics Unified Game. She will be launching the Elena Delle Donne Charitable Foundation which will combine initiatives from both the Special Olympics and Lyme disease awareness, a disease that plagued her throughout her college career.
