Chad Knaus

NASCAR Crew Chief for Jimmie Johnson

Chad Knaus is the man behind Jimmie Johnson’s No. 48 Lowe’s Chevrolet car, coaching Johnson to seven Sprint Cup Championships, including five in a row from 2006-2010. As the crew chief for Johnson at Hendrick Motor Sports, Knaus is responsible for building and managing a team of 100 employees set on one common goal of winning races. Knaus’ experience transcends sports, and his challenges are not unlike other small businesses around the country. What sets Knaus apart is his leadership, vision and ability to organize a team that performs at the highest level. He is part of the sport’s most prominent storylines and historical moments, bringing to the table a fresh perspective on what it takes to succeed in an industry defined by a few key performances.
After making his NASCAR debut in 1991, Knaus spent time with some of the most prominent racing names in the sport. In 1993, Knaus joined the No. 24 Hendrick Motorsports car driven by NASCAR legend Jeff Gordon. The five years Knaus spent on Gordon’s team led to two championships in 1995 and 1997. Knaus spent the next two seasons with another legend, Dale Earnhardt, followed by a year-long stint at Tyler Jet Motorsports. In 1999, Knaus seized an opportunity to lead the Dodge development team, which eventually led to his first role as a NASCAR crew chief when he was promoted to direct Stacy Compton’s team in 2001.
Knaus moved back to Hendrick Motorsports after one year in 2002 to assume his current role on Johnson’s team. Since then, the duo has asserted itself as the most dominant force in NASCAR over the last ten years, amassing more wins (60), top 5 finishes (162), and top 10 finishes (231) than any other team in the sport. Knaus is the only NASCAR crew chief to ever win five consecutive NASCAR Sprint Cup Series championships.
Born in Rockford, Illinois, Knaus grew up around the racetracks of the Midwest. By the time he was a teenager, Knaus served as crew chief to his father. Together they earned their first title at Rockford Speedway when Knaus was just 14 years old, followed by a win in the Great Northern Series championship and a second-place finish in the NASCAR Winston Racing Series. Knaus won seven championships with his father before breaking into NASCAR in the early 90s.
The crew chief has delivered motivational speeches at major conferences such as the 2013 VGM Conference and is also a frequent contributor on SiriusXM NASCAR Radio’s “The Morning Drive.”
