For his success, he was named the ESPN/Home Depot College Coach of the Year, the Scripps College Coach of the Year, the Black Coaches Association Male Coach of the Year, and the George Munger Award College Coach of the Year by the Maxwell Football Club.
Serving as the President of the American Football Coaches Association Board of Trustees in 2008, Willingham is now one of thirteen members of The College Football Playoff Selection Committee. He is one of a handful of individuals who has the power to choose the four teams for College Football Playoffs.
