Fred Cook

President & CEO of GolinHarris

Fred Cook is a veteran of the marketing communications industry and has been able to use his years of experience to develop innovative business strategies and apply nuanced thinking with great success.

Since 1986, Cook has worked at GolinHarris, a U.S. based communications firm and part of the Interpublic Group of Companies. In 2003, he was appointed as the company’s President and Chief Executive Officer.

During his tenure with GolinHarris, Cook has managed numerous strategic planning and brand marketing campaigns for high-profile clients including Nintendo of America, Visa, Amazon.com and more. He has also directed public affairs and crisis management programs for Toyota, The Walt Disney Company, and BAX Global amongst others.

Cook has gained additional fame and recognition for his 2014 release of “Improvise.” The inspirational book provides lessons from his lifetime of uncommon experiences to inspire the next generation of entrepreneurs. Bold and wildly, entertaining, Cook reveals truths that prove the path to the corner office isn't always the obvious one.

Recognizing the changing landscape of the marketing communications industry, Cook drastically reorganized GolinHarris in 2011 to be better suited for the faster paced, social media driven consumer that dominates today’s economy. Specifically, Cook did away with traditional roles that made company employees generalists within their field and transitioned them to innovative and more specialized positions. Instead of account executives and supervisors, GolinHarris now fields a staff of catalysts, creators, connectors and strategists more apt to handle particular needs of the agency’s clients. This new structure, which the agency calls “g4,” has proven successful since its implementation, attracting new business and providing significant growth.

Cook’s innovative thinking and leadership has helped earn numerous accolades and awards for GolinHarris, including the distinction as Americas Agency of the Year for 2013 from The Holmes Report. The success of the g4 structure also garnered personal recognition for Cook from The Holmes Report, as he received a SABRE Award for Outstanding Individual Achievement in 2012 for driving radical change in the public relations agency model.

Outside of GolinHarris, Cook is a trustee of the Institute of Public Relations, a member of The Economic Club of Chicago, The Executives’ Club of Chicago, and The Arthur W. Page Society, a professional association of senior public relations and corporate communications executives.

Originally from Indiana, Cook is a graduate of Indiana University and resides in Chicago with his wife and two children.
