The closer the elbows stay together, the better the swing. Ben Hogan made a big deal of keeping the elbows pointed towards the hips instead of pointing outward along the target line; doing so prevents plane inconsistencies and changes in radius during the swing (i.e., chicken winging). Keeping the elbows pointing back, down, or at the hips (versus down the line) automatically promotes connection of the upper arms to the chest and keeps the elbows closer together! Maintaining the "triangle" of arms and shoulders is something common to every great golf swing. This is also what is referred to as staying "connected."
