I'd been waiting all week to do this shoot with the wonderful Nicole. Along with Michele, Paul and Barry, we went to The Devil's Pulpit, in Finnich Glenn.
I didn't realise at the time that the place had recently been featured in a popular TV show, so when had quite a steady stream of visitors throughout the day. Not exactly ideal when you've planned a nude shoot.
During my stay in Scotland I had access to the Sigma 135mm f/1.8 Art series lens (many thanks to Sigma Imaging UK for the loaner!). An absolutely fantastic lens when it would nail focus, although I had something of a problem in that area.
Even with the AF Fine Tune on my Nikon D800 dialled all the way to -20, it wasn't hitting focus perfectly every time. It was still back focusing on quite a few shots. So, this is why there aren't many shots taken with this lens in the video.
Unfortunately, I don't have a Nikon mount Sigma dock. Sigma didn't send one along with the lens, and the only dock that Paul has is the Sigma mount version. So, I couldn't calibrate the lens independently of the camera.
As I say, though, when it did nail focus it was gorgeous, and wonderfully sharp. But, I had to regularly shoot at f/4 to get enough depth of field that the near edge was in focus, which kind of defeats the purpose of an f/1.8 lens. If I'd been able to calibrate the lens with the dock, I've no doubt it would've hit its mark every time.
Besides the Sigma 135mm, I used the Nikon 50mm f/1.4D AF, which performed as well as it always does. I had the Pixapro Hybrid360 iTTL (Godox AD360II) with me to light things up. With the 120cm Godox umbrella softbox it worked well. Even without the diffusion material on the front, it made for a nice large reflector.
Nicole was amazing, and we have plans to shoot at some very exciting locations the next time I make my way back to Scotland. No promises on a timescale for those, but when it happens, they'll be up on the vlog!
Big thank yous to Michele and Barry for letting me use some of the footage you guys shot during the day, and another to Paul for being my voice activated light stand for the day! :)
