GRAIN = TENSION = PITCH
John Good (dw Sr. Executive Vice President) realized that grain orientation has a profound effect on a drum shell's fundamental pitch. Grain patterns with more tension cause the shell to have a higher fundamental pitch. Less tension will cause a lower pitch.
Horizontal Grain has maximum tension.
Vertical Grain has minimum tension.
Diagonal Grain has moderate/displaced tension.
Using different grain combinations in shells controls the shell's tension, allowing the same size shell to have a different fundamental pitch.

John has developed shell types such as HVLT, VLT, X, VLX, and more to help achieve the ideal fundamental pitch for a shell.
