    First… Happy New Year 2018!

Ten years ago this month, I recorded the DJ mix that put me on the map as a DJ - “Bluelight.” It has been re-EQed and remastered for this re-release.

The mix was inspired by a weeklong trip to Charleston, SC (just prior to NYE 2008). It was a crazy, drug- and alcohol-fueled time (I’m thankfully now in recovery, and haven’t used either in close to 5 years), yet it was one of the best times I’d ever had in my life up to that moment. The mix was named after a message board where many of the friends I spent that week with had interacted.

“Bluelight” was also the first time I used the “never never land” sample as an opener for my DJ mixes. Recorded on an actual micro-cassette answering machine in 1994 (taken from a message left for me by an old friend and bandmate), I was able to transfer the recording to the digital realm. I’d used in on my debut album “Breakup” back in 1998, but had not made it into the musical “calling card” it is for me today.

    And on YouTube:

To be honest, for the first 10 years of my existence as a DJ (1998-2008) I wasn’t very good. Many would’ve argued that I was terrible. I didn’t practice enough, suffered bad stage fright (unless I drank alcohol, in which case I couldn’t mix for shit), and had plenty of misadventures which side-tracked me from music during that time. “Bluelight” was the moment where my mixing, beat-matching and track selection all finally coalesced. It concludes with an original track I did called “Kommando,” containing snippets from the 1980s Arnold Schwarzenegger movie of the same name.

    And on YouTube:

I’ve heard from people all over my home state and country who somehow ended up with a copy of the mix and had no idea it was me. In some cases I’ve met them at random at festivals and parties. If you’re one of those - someone who’s heard the mix a million times and already enjoyed it - I hope you’ll give it another listen.

To the newcomers who’ve never heard it, this is a snapshot of where was musically in 2008. It, like everything else I do and write, is very personal to me and tells a story. I hope you’ll enjoy it and share it with someone else.

    Much love
