Rory was Invited out to the Virginia Institute of Blacksmithing to lead a workshop with 8 other blacksmiths. The project was to forge a bench. This bench was inspired by the north entrance of the Blue Ridge Tunnel, the longest of four tunnels engineered by Claudius Crozet in the 1850s. This bench was assembled using forged corners, tenons, rivets and collars.
The northern entrance has a very prominent arch that demands your attention. Designing this bench, I took that presentation into consideration. Reflecting the dramatic opening of the tunnel as though the viewer was peering through, we have repeating patterns of the arch opening. Complemented with dramatic rhombus
shapes, that reference light and the shape of the tunnel, reduce in size towards the bottom/center back of the bench. A play on visual perspective of looking down such underground passages. Next was how to interpret this design with forged iron, thus the result of this bench that was completed by a competent and skilled team of blacksmiths.
