One of Tchaikovsky's finest songs, and possibly some of his most upbeat and extroverted music!
I wrote this last year to round off my final recital for my undergraduate course. Much of the original song is untouched, save for some judicious re-registration - in fact, the whole Andantino introduction is note-for-note lifted from the score.
The third verse is arranged in a much more virtuoso style, with a couple of reharmonisations and a flurry of triplets adding to the intensity of the music. After the grand climax, Tchaikovsky composes a fade-out ending; here it is expanded with a Rachmaninoff-style outburst.
