On the 30th June 1973 Patrick Moore, and 400+ eclipse chasers , witnessed a total solar eclipse aboard the good ship Monte Umbe. Some time later the ship docked off Mauritania and the passengers spent some free time strolling around the 'interesting' town of Nouadhibou. On the final evening Patrick performed a hilarious ditty recalling the trip, during the last night concert. Although no films exist of that performance, I have combined pictures by Andrew Wells with a soundtrack from John C. McConnell, to attempt to recreate the now legendary performance by Patrick. He may have been known as an amateur astronomer, but to anyone who knew him Patrick was an entertainer in every sense of the word. If it wasn't 'fun' he wouldn't do it and this animation hopefully shows Patrick at his absolute best. Enjoy! Thanks to Andrew Wells and John McConnell for permission to use their pictures and sound track. Incidentally, the man in the chorus shot, on the left hand side, is Patrick's great friend Paul Doherty.
