WKMG Local 6, CBS affiliate, Consumer Reporter and Fill in Anchor, Eryka Washington, covers the alarming increase in the amount of insurance fraud from roofing companies in Florida for wind, hail and storm damage. With the official start of Hurricane Season on June 1st, WKMG wanted to bring this issue to light for Florida consumers.
These roofing companies may be local and licensed, but red flags include offering free roofs, telling homeowners and business owners they won't collect the deductible or offer incentives like a free TV or gifts to get a signed contract.
WKMG interviewed Haag, the Insurance Institute and Collis Roofing to talk about what the warning signs are and why the situation is growing.
One of the things you can do to protect yourself is to get a second opinion from a reputable roofer. You can find reputable roofing companies through CFRSA.org, an organization of roofers, attorneys, suppliers, insurance and manufacturers devoted entirely to consumer advocacy and resources to local residents and on going education for those involved with roofing in regards to safety, application, laws and more.
Collis Roofing is a proud and active member of the CFRSA and the owner of Collis Roofing, Doug Lanier, is currently serving as the Vice President on the board.
