After initially seeking multiple myeloma treatment near his home on Long Island, New York, Joe Trotta decided he needed a center that specialized in myeloma and could offer more treatment options, including myeloma cancer clinical trials. Joe chose the Weill Cornell Medicine Multiple Myeloma Center in New York City based on its status as a stand-alone, dedicated myeloma cancer center. However, Joe now attributes his myeloma recovery to both the phenomenal and attentive care he received, as well as Weill Cornell’s affiliation with NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, where he received his stem cell transplant during treatment. Find out why Joe is very grateful for the expert care he received and says, “I’m here because of them… What else can I say?”

I was first diagnosed in July of 2003 with IGA Myeloma. As you can expect, I was really taken back from the diagnosis. And I originally went and sought help out in Long Island, where I come from. And my experience was not that good. The thing that made Weill Cornell different from the other hospitals in the area was they had a separate Myeloma Center. The attention that they gave me and all the other patients in that program was unbelievable. They were with you every step of the way. Our Myeloma Centers focus, specifically, on this patient population. And being at Cornell, we have relationships with all the other sub-specialties. The patient has this multi-disciplinary team at their disposal. During my stem cell transplant, I came down with Stevens-Johnson Syndrome, which is very, very rare. Thank God I was here, in the hospital. Because they had a dermatologist actually come in, diagnose me and within a matter of minutes, they had me on IV for four days straight. And here I am today. I definitely look forward to meeting any patient who has Myeloma and hopefully helping them along. And dealing with their obstacles and trying to make it a little bit easier and a little bit less scary. I'm impressed, to be honest with you. I'm very, very impressed with the amount of care and competency out of this hospital. What else can I say? But without them, I wouldn't be here. That's the best thing I can possibly say, is I'm here because of them.
