This year we decided to take a road trip around Iceland for spring break. We ended up sticking to only the south coast. There were just too many things to do and see. Iceland is such a strange but beautiful place. I'm glad that I was able to take my son to experience it with me.
Place to visit
Jökulsárlón - Beautiful place. We saw several seals swimming around the glacier chunks. It was a long drive but worth it.
Þingvellir- Make sure you are careful about where you park. I guess you have to pay to park in some areas because I got a ticket. I loved this place. We walked the trails for hours and were very disappointed. The most beautiful area is near the waterfall and the long hike we did was a miserable one and a big waste of time. The have bathrooms, showers and a washing machine that seemed to be free (there was no washer).
Hrunalaug Hot Spring, Sólheimar - There is no one here to collect money but in the little building, there is a sign that asks you to leave money. I believe that this is private property and the money is used for upkeep. Make sure you bring coins. It was like a little hot tub in the middle of nowhere. I stayed here for hours listening to music. My son and I were the only ones here. It would have been so nice to have some drinks too but maybe next time.
Blue Lagoon- Go here on the way to the airport. You don’t have to pay to get in to see it. If you park in the parking lot and walk towards the entrance, you will see a path. You can walk around and see all of the beautiful blue water you want for nothing.
SELJAVALLALAUG - The was an actual pool that was naturally warmed that you have to walk a little bit to get to. It was warm, definitely not hot, but comfortable. This also was free but there is an unattended box to leave money to help with upkeep. This place was absolutely beautiful. You have to see it.
We brought food from home but you don’t need to. You do need to bring a little cooking stove like thishttps://www.amazon.com/Etek...
and pot to be able to boil water. The Bonus Grocery Store has reasonable prices so buy your stuff there and you will have more room in your bag. Bring some snacks and stuff though so you don’t have to buy anything on the plane or in the airport. You can take an empty water bottle through security and fill it up with water when you get on the other side.
The gas stations sell hot dogs that are somewhat reasonable if you breakdown and want to eat some real food (we did a couple of times).
I really wanted to go to Reykjadalur Hot Spring Trailhead, Reykjadalu (natural hot springs) but ran out of time. If I could go back in time, I would skip Geysir and the waterfalls and go there instead.
A family of 8, not including the puppy, with weekly vlog and miscellaneous nonsense videos in between. This channel was started as a family project over the summer of 2016 but has turned into so much more. It has gotten us to spend more time together and have fun doing it. The kids help create, edit and make suggestions for each video. We are anything but the picture perfect family but it gets pretty interesting around here. The two babies are a full-time job on their own and now we have a puppy too. Add in the other four kids and it's....... hard to explain. I think it's something you will have to see.
