People during Jesus’ time on earth had two words for time. Chronos refers to sequential time—minutes and seconds; the sort of time you and I live in. Especially for us who call Central New Jersey home, chronos time often runs our lives. There’s only so much time! We make decisions based off how much—or how little—time we have. Living according to chronos time usually leaves us stressed, tired, and unfulfilled. There’s just never enough time.

Kairos is a different sort of time. Kairos refers to a time when conditions are right for the accomplishment of a crucial action; it points to a decisive moment. In the New Testament, kairos often points to times when God acts and breaks through chronos time. This sort of time isn’t concerned about the clock. Kairos is concerned about pivotal moments—the intersection of minutes and moments. In these moments, God wakes us up and breathes life into us!
