Famine was declared in parts of Unity State, South Sudan on February 20th, 2017, with 100,000 people facing starvation. However, as of June 21, 2017, famine is on longer occurring in the affected areas inn Unity State, thanks to intensive humanitarian efforts. But the situation has gotten worse in other parts of the country: an additional 1.7 million people are now one step away from famine across South Sudan, and 6 million people are in urgent need of humanitarian assistance. Keynyang Deng is only 13 years old: he and his family are among the people on the brink of famine in Northern Bahr el Ghazal. In June 2016, Action Against Hunger provided emergency treatment to Keynyang's severely malnourished baby brother, and helped his mother with programs providing clean water, and sanitation. Action Against Hunger is reaching 349,500 people in South Sudan with urgent humanitarian assistance.
