On Thursday 12 April, our Union President, Flora Noble, met with Catherine Pope (Vice President of Southampton UCU) to find out more about the industrial action and answer some important questions, including compensation for students.

Check out the times below to find the answer to a specific question:

00:18 – Why are lecturers striking?
01:48 – Can you explain the difference between “Strike actions” and “actions short of a strike” and explain what lecturers will be doing
06:36 – How long do you think the strikes will go on for?
10:34 – Will that majority opinion be nationally? Will it have to be a national vote, not just for each local branch?
11:42 – Do you think Southampton itself has an ability to impact this issue or do you think it’s a wider picture that needs everybody together to make a change?
15:21 – Clarifying our stance on the strike action and compensation
17:00 – How does UCU feel about this discussion about compensation?
23:10 –What is the Dinosaur of solidary like to work with?
25:42 – What advice would you give to students who are worried?
29:17 – How can students get in touch with UCU if they have any questions?

Following the USS consultation held on Friday 13 April, UCU has decided to suspend all strike action (64% of those who attended voted to end strike action). To find out more about the Students' Union’s support of UCU, head over to our blog: Show less
