By their shadowy movement, their spiky crawl, these three kinetic spiders are revealed instinctively, felt before they are seen creeping into the electrifying world of Arcadia.
Suspended above a crowd of thousands, aerial performers descend from their abdomens as if by spinning silken threads. Mimicking the movements and rhythms of live spiders, they evoke awe and terror, nightmares and dreams, awakening our primal impulses and fears as they crawl overhead.
In partnership with Arcadia Spectacular, Rusty Squid designed, prototyped and crafted three 6-metre long robotic spiders. The complex and primal motion of living spiders were studied and captured in an elegant mechanical system, and refined for the robust requirements of a demanding event environment.
Initially seen at Glastonbury as part of Arcadia's Metamorphosis spectacular in the summer of 2015, the spiders are now on an international tour. This work was generously funded by the Arts Council and Bristol Green Capital Partnership award.
