War and Nation: Identity and the Process of State Building in Latin America

War and Nation is an academic research network funded by the Leverhulme Trust to discuss how nations emerged from the wars of independence. The project seeks to interrogate how war became a catalyst for the creation of identity in South America. From early on war fuelled the development of identities that would eventually become national. To be able to understand how the new states that emerged from colonial administrative areas developed, this project will work outside the constraints of the nations we know today and study conflict from a regional perspective. Our research events engage with popular understandings of the nation in a way that will be of benefit to academics and the wider public. The primary investigator is Dr Natalia Sobrevilla Perea and the international co-investigators are: Dr Marcela Echeverri, Dr Juan Luis Ossa, Dr Alejandro M. Rabinovich, Dr Gabriel di Meglio, Dr Claudia Rosas and Dr Daniel Gutierrez Ardilla. The network facilitator is Dr Lorna Dillon.
